Tanner noted with some small bit of frustration that the Baroness seemed antsy. Maybe not antsy. Maybe just upset a bit. Or maybe it’s me, he thought, but he noted she had refused tea and hadn’t even looked at what he thought were her favorite raisin tarts. She had shown up at the landing port in Neen and had taken the Duchy d’Avigdor limo to the palace. She had only brought two EliteGuards which he thought was a bit unusual, but then just about everything about the Baroness was unusual.

He shook his head. Matter of fact, he thought, the whole half of the human race that is female is a topic I try very hard to simply take at face value. Still have no idea why some things are so, so important to a woman—and others are not.

He had gone through that just a week ago or so when Helena had come back from Birdland and told him she had a request. Her request had turned out to be an “order” that the Duchy d’Avigdor make its first claim on a new planet to add to the realm. He had asked why—since the planet was empty of sentients—and how that acquisition would help the Duchy d’Avigdor. The facts, as he saw them, made no sense, but she had taken on that look of stubbornness that he could now recognize.

She had said there was “something” there that needed more investigation and that she would look after it on her own. He’d wondered about that and had asked, but he was told it was all about the ball-birds that were in the aviary on the second floor.

He had no idea what she had meant by that, so he had nodded and agreed that the Birdland claim would be made—by him—at the next RIM Confederacy Council meeting, which was just two days ago.

He shook his head, trying to clear the Helena memories and focus on the reason for his current meeting with the Baroness and the Caliph. Tanner looked back at the Baroness as the Caliph came into the brown room. Tanner had picked this room for no reason except that he thought it looked like a safe place to have his partnership meeting. Once the Baroness had entered and given off those upset vibes, he had second-guessed that decision. At least the Caliph is smiling, he thought as the tall alien smiled at them both and found a seat beside the Baroness.

He smiled too, and then they chatted about standard concerns such as the trade deficits they were all facing, the lack of really good top-quality navy captains, and the revenue splitting streams from the Confederacy government were once again late. The usual items that heads of state talked about were noodled around, and eventually, the Caliph brought up the reason they’d chosen to meet.
